B2B vs B2C lead qualification: telling buyers apart in a mixed inbox
If companies and households both contact you, treating every enquiry the same costs you twice: business buyers wait too long, and retail customers get a sales process they didn't ask for.
Why the split matters
A business enquiry and a consumer enquiry for the same product are different sales. The business buyer usually needs a site visit, a formal quotation with terms, and approval from someone else. The consumer usually wants a price, a date and reassurance. Each needs a different person, script and speed.
Qualifying the type early decides who answers, what they ask first and how much time the lead deserves.
The signals that separate them
No single signal is conclusive. Weigh several together:
- Scale. Headcounts (“12 people”), multiple sites (“both campuses”) or quantities (“40 doors”) suggest an organisation.
- Premises. Office, warehouse, clinic, school or hotel point to business. Villa, apartment or “my house” point to consumer.
- Who is writing. A job title (IT manager, procurement, facilities) or a company email domain is strong evidence of business.
- Existing relationship. If the person or company is already in your CRM as a business account, that settles most cases.
- Product and value. Business-grade products and larger order values lean business, though wealthy households blur this line.
When the evidence is thin, ask
“Price?” and “Please DM details” carry almost no signal. Don't guess. Reply with one question that qualifies without friction:
One answer usually settles type, size and intent together.
Set a confidence bar
Whether a person or software makes the call, decide how sure you need to be before acting. In Sentinel, a verdict is applied automatically only above a confidence threshold (70% by default). Below it, the lead goes to a review queue. A person's decision is never overwritten.
Route by type, then by intent
- Type decides the team: projects for business, retail for consumer.
- Intent decides the speed: high-intent leads get a response target in minutes and a manager alert if missed.
- Category decides the specialist: education, healthcare, hospitality and so on.
Check your split monthly
Look at leads that were reclassified by hand. If one signal keeps misleading you, such as large villas looking like businesses, adjust your threshold or categories. The goal isn't a perfect classifier; it's that no business buyer waits behind a casual question.
Sentinel automates this process. See B2B lead management and how the AI qualifies leads.
